Mentor program

Mentor program
This idea/suggestion is Open. You can respond to ask questions or discuss the idea and either vote it up or down if you believe it should or should not be implemented, respectively. Popular suggestions and ideas will be considered by the development team to become reality in-game.
Proposal
Obviously swg is a pretty complex mmo especially when compared against wow and classic wow, so to help new comers a menu for for a mentor might be pretty helpful. People above level 50 or whatever threshold could sign up to be a mentor and if they spend so much time assigned to a new player they could earn rewards. Maybe make tier rewards
Justification
Hopefully it could help bring in new players so the game seems less like a mountain to climb
Motivation
I'm a new player and this game is super complex so having this kind of system could be super beneficial

It’s a decent idea, but I’d imagine pretty complex to develop and follow through on, especially with volunteer staff.
If something like this, or a tutorial type piece of content were to be made, it would have been made already. So instead of this there are plenty of mechanisms to help new players already at disposal. Discord channels, in game chat, guilds and the R3 wiki are all available.
The beauty of SWG is that it can’t all be learnt in a day. Or a month. Or years.
So new players do have to lean on the community because I think what you ask is just too much to to ask for, despite how beneficial it would be.

This is done daily by experienced players. Hard to judge if a new face to swg will still be there in a week. Help comes with time and effort on the new individuals part. Meet people, ask questions and get to know the game.

Thanks for your suggestion.

In-game, players can turn on the (HELPER) tag above their name from the Community Window which is intended to allow players to self-identify as someone willing to help new players. Our community on Discord is also a great way to find answers to questions.

We will also eventually have a full tutorial experience for new players, it is just farther down on our roadmap.

I’m not sure there is a way to reward helpers without creating a system that would be easy to take advantage of. Historically, the community both here and on the live game has always been full of other players willing to help new players so I’m not sure of the necessity to add an extrinsic incentive as well.

I personally really like this idea, not sure if there is a way to implement it that would avoid people abusing it with alts/guilds. I think Kota makes a good point about how much there is to learn and giving older players a slight nudge in the direction of helping. To the point where doing that helping could be a full rewarding activity itself could be really cool and positive.

I've learned almost everything I know about SWG in-game, through text chat. <- This is my preferred way of communicating with people, sometimes there are ideas in the game that are complex and take massive emails or tell text dumps of info to get even the core idea across "RE" for example.

If there could be a system where the student "rates/grades" their mentor and provides a small info about what the mentor taught them during the last "Blank amount of game time" that might be a way R3 Staff could look through that info and give out rewards to the mentor that are fitting. Though my idea would require some R3 staff free time to do which may not be doable.

Also has to be said SWG is a community, so I would recommend all players join a guild to experience SWG, as they will get access to knowledge form their guild friends, access to housing, and depending on the guild they will get help in gearing up, combat or crafting and space.
