Proposal

Ground Pilot or Crewman

Is a concept for a new in-game profession. Like Pilot, Chronicler and politician, this is a new secondary profession. However, unlike those secondary professions you earn up to 9 skill points as you progress through the profession which can be used to customise your vehicle(s).

Whilst all vehicles have base stats, these can be boosted using your 9 Crewman skill points in the 4 following areas:

Armor Plating
Increases overall protection and mitigates damage taken.

Weapons
Increases damage output and a vehicles rate of fire.

Engines
Determines how quickly your vehicle can negotiate terrain and manoeuvre.

Mechanical Engineering
This skill can be used to improve the power of vehicle repair kits (new crafted stims for vehicles) and reduces the time taken to completely rebuild a destroyed vehicles.

Example Builds

Heavily Armored Tank
ARMOR PLATING [4/4]
WEAPONS [1/4]
ENGINES [1/4]
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING [3/3]

The All-Rounder
ARMOR PLATING [2/4]
WEAPONS [2/4]
ENGINES [3/4]
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING [2/3]

Assault Vehicle
ARMOR PLATING [2/4]
WEAPONS [4/4]
ENGINES [2/4]
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING [1/3]

The Scout
ARMOR PLATING [1/4]
WEAPONS [4/4]
ENGINES [4/4]
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING [0/3]

Available Skill Tree Certification
  • New ability; can ranged attack from a mount (includes jetpacks)
  • Weaponised Speeders; STAP-1, BARC, Swoop, and Speederbike.
  • Weaponised Multi Passenger Vehicles; Desert Skiff, Tantive IV and V35 Landspeeder
  • Pilot Certification; AT-PT, AT-RT, AT-XT, AT-ST
  • Pilot Certification; Modified Hailfire/AT-AT/TBC Neutral Variant

Other considerations

Players should be able reallocate their skill points every x number of hours or after a vehicle has been completely destroyed.

To keep PvP fun, once a vehicle has been destroyed it goes into a 60 minute repair cycle.

Vehicles can only be repaired at a new hybrid garage/repair factory and this requires in-game energy and resources in order to complete a full repair.

Vehicles can be used in open world combat but would not be accessible in dungeons etc.
Justification
A new and exciting way to play SWG and enjoy content that is unique to Restoration.
Motivation
New content, exciting addition to existing gameplay and a much asked for update during the live service.

Fun concept, i'd love to see it in the game.
I too have a few doubts, mostly related to balancing it around some things.

Do you have any ideas on how players will be able to get EXP to progress in this? It can be a Themepark style questline of some sorts, what do you think?

Looks super good. I just have some doubts about using it in pve and kyting every elite mobs. Anyway, might be fun in the Krayt canyon
Hmm using AT-ST as an example, maybe it aggros mobs hard. So in the example of the Krayt canyon it might not last long vs elite creatures.

An extreme gameplay mechanic could also be that if you kill/farm elite creatures in a tank their loot drop rates are significantly reduced or said creature receives a buff to stomp you.

I think it would be fun if it worked like the space quests or a Themepark. Though I appreciate that would be a lot of content to create.

Needs fleshing out I think.

Love the concept. Hard to think what this would be like from a balancing perspective in open world, however...

This would definitely make a fun mini-game regardless and could be good in instanced combat (like "grand" battlefields or something).

Would be interesting to hear how one might progress in this skill.

Maybe treating this as end-game content would be the way to go about it. For example let’s say it’s locked behind a number of in-game pre-requisites.

CL80
Themeparks
Ace Pilot
Kashyyyk
Mustafar

Also from a logical perspective, If you had to level up XP between Themepark style missions. You would likely do that with a kitted out AT-RT or other Scout Vehicle rather than a massively overpowered but painfully slow marching AT-AT.

But if you need to drop an enemy shield with an insane amount of health, you might want to bring in the big guns (Hailfire/AT-AT)

My concern would be this PV locks crafters out of the process.
The Droid Engineer profession is in need of some expansion. I would rather see this whole concept reworked to be crafted, rather than player skills buffing vehicles.

Not closing this as it’s a great discussion, but a few notes:

1\ we won’t add a new primary profession, if we made a change like this, it would be either a secondary profession (like pilot) or added to an existing profession; but I’m not sure it’s suitable for either.

2\ note that a tentative, previously unannounced plan for Ranger is allowing mounted combat (pet mounts, not vehicles).

3\ GCW Officers are intended to have callable AI powered vehicles (I know that’s not players but just for consideration)

Shattered dreams of me being able to stomp on someone with an AT-ST. 😂

Thanks for the response though and sharing the snippet around AI powered vehicles.

I honestly hadn’t considered that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.
